When it comes to multi-digit multiplication, finding a way to get students practicing over and over again (without complaints) is a major win. And I’ve got just the thing.
Why Math Games work in Upper Elementary
By the time students reach 4th and 5th grade, they’ve been introduced to many of the major multiplication strategies: area models, partial products, and the standard algorithm. But knowing how to multiply isn’t the same as being fluent or confident with the skill.
That’s where math games shine.

The Multiplication Game that Keeps them Thinking
One of my favorite go-to centers for 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication is a partner game called Math Squares.
It’s a clever blend of computation and logic – students solve a multiplication problem, find the matching answer in a grid, and draw a line on the game board. The goal? Complete squares to claim them as your own.
Students love the strategy behind it:
- “Should I go for that square now, or block my competitor?”
- “Where’s the number I need?”
- “I need to get this one before they do!”
All the while, they’re solving rigorous multiplication problems without realizing how much they’re practicing.
How to Set it Up in Under 5 Minutes
Let’s be real: prep time matters. Here’s how easy it is to get this game going:
Materials Needed:
- A printed Math Squares game board (there are several included in the resource)
- Dice (my kids like these larger foam dice!)
- Colored pencils or markers
How to Play:
- Students roll the dice and solve the corresponding multiplication problem.
- They find the answer on the grid and draw a line around it.
- Whoever draws the final line of a square gets to color it in or write their initials.
- Play continues until the grid is full. The student with the most squares wins!
You can use it for:
- Math centers
- Partner work
- Early finishers
- Test prep days
- Sub plans (yes, it’s that easy to explain!)
Real Talk: Why It Works
This isn’t just a game students enjoy; it’s one that actually works. The combination of visual scanning, strategic decision-making, and repeated practice means your students are getting more than just rote multiplication – they’re thinking critically and building fluency.
